Update 28/10/12: This Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Cake was the first fondant cake I ever made. Looking back now I cringe at how bad the photos are…and the fondant work wasn’t too great either. But this will always be my favourite cake because it started me on this whole blogging journey. So many things I would do differently now.
The one thing I wouldn’t do again: I wouldn’t do a chocolate head again. A large black spray-painted polystyrene ball looks way nicer and it takes seconds to do. Attach two little spray-painted balls for the ears by skewering them with kebab sticks.
The one thing I would do again: Buy the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Figurines
!!! Not only did I NOT have to make them, but the boys have been playing with them for years now and they are still a favourite. Worth every penny. And I am so over the idea that everything on the cake HAS to be edible.
Maybe I should make another one…just to see what it would look like now…
This is THE CAKE I made for Pieter’s 2nd birthday in September. I spent 3 days figuring out how to make the head out of chocolate (without a mould). I finally gave up and cut Pieter’s Nemo ball in half. In went some chocolate. A bit of tape to hold it all together and a lot of vigorous shaking and Voila!
I used the same method (with 2 ball-pit balls) for the ears.
I made the cake in a Pyrex bowl to get the clubhouse shape just so. On went the buttercream icing and the VERY RED marshmallow fondant. Hmmmmm.
The Trees are made out of melted (and dyed) Rice Crispy Treats (as is the foot and the hand).
For the figurines I used these plastic Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Figurines (my bad for cheating).
