Block a Week CAL 2014 Crochet-along Squares

Optional Additional Rounds

The crochet squares used in this Block a Week crochet-along have not all been written for the same yarn and hook size.  Most people find it easier to keep the same hook and yarn for all the squares, making some of the squares come out slightly smaller than others.

Using a 4 mm Clover Amour Crochet Hook (US G/6  UK 8) and double knit yarn, my finished squares have come out anywhere from 7.5″ to 8.5″.

Week 1’s Odyssey was the biggest, so I am adding rounds to match the size and stitch count of Odyssey.  My final rounds all have 164 or 168 st’s and 4 corner spaces (usually ch-2 corner spaces).  The exception to this is Harlequin Shells (Bonus Block 1), which has 172 st’s in the last round.  I’m not going to break my head about it.  I can fudge it one stitch either way :)

Below you will find a list of the additional rounds I have ended up adding.  Feel free to use/modify as you please.

If you need help identifying which square is which, have a look at this post, which contains photos of each square to date.  You can also access each individual tutorial by clicking on the name of the relevant square below.

Please Note

All the additional rounds start in a corner space, using a standing stitch.  You should be familiar with standing stitches by now as we have used them in virtually every square.  I have not done the whole join-your-yarn-by-making-a-blah-di-blah.  If the instructions tell you to start with (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in any corner space, for example, the first of those dc’s will be either a (sl st, ch 3) or a standing double crochet, whichever method you prefer.

No-one has helped me check the numbers below and there are so many of them that you are bound to find an error or seven.  If you do find an error, please let me know so that I can fix it.  Much obliged!

I hope you are all still enjoying the CAL!

I’m late to the party but still enjoying it. Thanks for all the hard work on the tutorials. Even in 2023 I am benefitting from them.

I followed the suggestion for the additional round of Block 44. However, I had to make a change because either the HDCs in the corner stand too tall or the BPHDCs are not high enough.I guess there’s a typo here.
I changed the BPDHCx into BPDCs.

I love your work! I’ve been doing your block a week 2014. It’s been so much fun so far. I’m done block 8. (I didn’t have time to “join” as you go). I Just have a quick question: do you “have” to block them? Thanks again for making all your lovely designs :)

Hi Nida. Firstly I have to say that the designs aren’t mine. I am just doing the photo tutorials. Secondly, you do not have to block them if you don’t want to. I usually don’t block, but I found that some of the squares had a tendency to warp unless blocked. See how you go and if you feel you can get away with not blocking, don’t block.

Did you use double strands of dk yarn or just one with a size G hook? I am currently stocking up on Stylecraft (LOVE the colors) and want to make sure I have enough for the next CAL.

Cindi, I just used 1 strand with the G hook. Next year’s CAL is going to be slightly different…

Dedri, I just want to tell you that everytime I see your picture on your blog, it makes me happy. You radiate joy. I really haven’t counted all of my outer stitches, but have blocked each to 12 inches. I believe they have all been pretty accurate as far as the final counts. I may be fudging a bit as well when it comes time to join. Thanks for all of your hard work. I sure hope you and your family feels better soon. A few of our family members have that crud too. Take care and thanks again !

Thank you, Becky. I scowl a lot in real life, but my mom likes me best when I am laughing with an open mouth, so that photo makes me think of her every time I see it. We are all on the mend, thank you for your concern. I hope your family gets better soon too.

    Dedri,

I had allready added a row or 2, and my blocks were about the same size…but I never counted the stitches. Just about a week ago I found out that the nummer of stitches would matter, at joining the blocks. Luckilly you anounced that you would make a post on this. I really want to thank you for your additional instructions. The adjustments take some time, but it’s time well spend.
I hope you don’t mind me mentioning…but you may want to check on block 12, the Kaleidoscoop Blossom. I think the additional row will be 164 stitches (37+4=41).
Still got to ajust some more blocks, but I’ll fix it.

I view your blog via bloglovin on my iPhone and yours is the only one that doesn’t come with a photo next to the title! Also as soon as I hop to the blog post I get catapulted to the end and cannot easily read or see what you’ve put! I don’t know why this happens!!

I had the same trubble on my Ipad. After I deselected Java in the Safari setting, the problem was solved.
