Crochet Elephant Comfort Blanket

Grace is a little Crochet Elephant Comfort Blanket. She is a companion for Eleanor, my Crochet Elephant Puzzle. So while you wait for me to get Eleanor’s pattern all pretty for publishing, you can make Grace for that special little tantrum-queen in your life.
The odds are very good that you have landed on this page because you love all things Elephant, so do yourself a favour and read the story about Eleanor the elephant matriarch and her friend Grace. I have to admit that I cried when I read it. I am such a sop! But I found it so moving how Grace (and several other elephants) mourned for Eleanor when she passed away.
Yes, but what about the blanket?
The blanket is worked in simple single crochet with a contrasting single crochet border. I have supplied instructions for three circles to embellish the blanket with, but you can use stars (here is a simple and beautiful pattern by a foothill home companion) or hearts…you can make the blanket multi-coloured or multi-stitched…

Materials
- 5.5 mm crochet hook for the blanket
- 4.0 mm crochet hook for Grace’s head
- Double-knit yarn in 2 colours – a 50 g ball should be sufficient for the blanket and the head. And a few meters will be enough for the border and the ears.
- Yarn needle
- Stuffing
- 2 Safety eyes/buttons/yarn for embroidering eyes

Hello! I’m having issues going from the trunk to the rest of the face. It says “Inside” for rown ten, but I can’t seem to get it to work that way. Any help would be appreciated. :-)

Hi Kelly. The inside purely refers to the fact that you have turned at the end of Round 9 and are now looking at the back (inside) of the trunk when making short row 10. Have you got a photo of short row 10 completed?

No. I might be doing something wrong because I always end up with the outside facing me. By the time I get to Row 11, I’m on the wrong side of things, both left to right and back to front.

Kelly, I think I know what it might be. When you are making the trunk, do you work around the inside or the outside? I suspect that you haven’t inverted your first round of the trunk. When making amigurumi, the outside of the work should always be facing you, unless otherwise stated. Please take a look THIS TUTORIAL by All About Ami. It explains what I mean. And then feel free to get back to me and we will trouble-shoot some more if it is needed :)

Am I the only one who noticed in row 2, that it says sc in sc, 10sts. The previous row has 5. It should say increase sc in each st right? I did that on my own, but wondered if anyone else saw it like I did.

Hi Merry, I am assuming you are talking about the ears? This is what Row 2 says: 2. CC: Sc inc in each st. Ch 1 and turn. (10)
Sc inc is when you make 2 sc’s in the same stitch, so you are increasing in each stitch. Could you please have another look at the pattern and tell me if that makes sense?

I LOVE IT! The ONLY thing I would change is the Trunk. The Trunk upwards is Good Luck. Thank You for sharing the pattern with us.

Thank you, Conni. I have heard that about the upward trunk before, but I like her drooping trunk. Trying to alter the pattern to make it point upward just messed with my head, but I have seen people sew the trunk to the forehead so that it looks like she is washing herself.

My daughter has gone animals for her children…do you have a pattern for a monkey, giraffe or zebra…all her babies are under 4 so they would still use these.

I don’t at the moment, I am afraid. We will soon have a giraffe and a zebra animal, but the comfort blankets won’t be available until the end of the year.

Hey Dedri! I really love this pattern and put my own twist on it. I was in the middle of making the elephant head last night and now the pattern has been updated. I just wanted to thank you for this pattern. I made ‘twin’ elephant loveys for my third baby, who is due in March 2014 (that way I can wash one without taking the lovey away). I started them before we knew the gender…now we know it’s a boy! I’m sure he will adore his lovey. Thank you! :)

Just a pleasure, Karen. That’s such a good idea. It’s horrible when you have to throw something they love in the wash. My friend washed her daughter’s favourite bunny and she cried the whole time it was in the wash! Now she sneaks in and steals it after bed time when she wants to wash it.

Me and another crochet buddy is working on the elephant head. We get to Line 13 and are just confused at to do the next stitch. Will be working in “rounds” or just working from row to row. Please help.

Marlo, I have just sent you an email. You do not turn at the end of round 13. you join to the first stitch of round 13 with a slip stitch. Then you work round 14, joining with a sl st again as in the pattern. If it says short row at the beginning of a row, it’s a row. If it doesn’t say short row, you work in the round, joining to the first stitch of the round with a slip stitch. Holler if you’re still stuck. x

Help! I’m not understanding part of Note 1: “Sc through both layers (rounds 2 and 3) of the ear and the next st of the head.”
Where do I go through the 2 and 3 layers of the ear?

When you have worked through rounds 1 and 4, it naturally folds the ear and pulls it flat. The ends of rounds 2 and 3 now lie on top of each other, so you just poke your hook through the next hole, which will be round 3, and the layer between it and the head, which will be round 2. Then you insert your hook into the next st of the head. In this way you work through all 3 layers – the 2 layers of the folded ear and the 1 layer of the head.
